An increasingly popular destination for tourists is Bulgaria, which joined the European Union in 2007. Our guide tells you why this is such a popular place with tourists. One reason is the Black Sea coast, where you can visit the gorgeous beaches of Varna and experience some great treatments at one of the many spa resorts. There are lots of thermal mineral water springs and you can benefit from a range of electro and light treatments. There are also some great mud treatments and curative sea water available.

The great ski resorts are another reason so many tourists are now heading to Bulgaria on vacation. The weather over there is some of the best for skiing in the world and some resorts, such as Bansko (the largest resort), have great snow coverage from December through to May. The ski resorts have also benefited from massive investment in recent years, making them ideal places to visit with fantastic hotels and other facilities as well as a brilliant range of ski runs to suit all abilities.

One of the major reasons Bulgaria is currently so popular with tourists is that it is really affordable to visit, making it great if you’re on a budget. People from Eastern Europe have long known the attractions of Bulgaria, but it is only fairly recently that people from elsewhere have started to catch on. The tourism economy is still developing and it’s still small enough that you can get great deals all year round. The government is also currently developing tourism through a comprehensive growth plan.

There is also a lot of great culture in Bulgaria, which is very attractive to a lot of tourists. For example, many of the villages in the countryside have been untouched by Western culture and are still the same as they were 100 years ago. In total there are over 5000 beautiful villages that you can visit and some places, such as Sozopol by the sea are becoming more tourist-friendly. In Sozopol, you can explore 1000s of years’ worth of history and see lots of houses with secret entrances.

Sofia is situated in the west of the country and it is the capital city of Bulgaria. It’s another popular location with tourists as there’s a lot of culture to be discovered. For example, the Boyana Church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you can visit some excavated prehistoric settlements. You can also visit the royal palace and the town wall, which is 1000s of years old. Sofia is also close to the weekend resort of Vitosha Mountain, which makes it even more popular with visitors.
