From Sun To Ski: Perfect Winter Travel Destinations
While summer is traditional viewed as the ideal time for getting away on a holiday, winter trips away are rapidly growing in popularity. From ski trips to weekend city breaks, the opportunities for getting away and recharging the batteries this winter are endless.
Of course, a winter travel destination doesn’t always have to be a cold one. While it is always possible to fly off to colder destinations for a winter holiday, deciding to fly that little bit father will bring you back to a warm summer climate.
For such a trip Australia and indeed most countries within the Southern Hemisphere stand out as obvious choices. Although the journey time is longer, within a few hours you could be sitting on the beach in your swimming suit enjoying the warm summer sunshine. Such breaks can do wonders for your health and in particular your mental health, allowing you to take a break from the dull, dreary winter days and fly away for a boost of vitamin D. And you never know, you may even come back to the office with a tan, much to the envy of all your colleagues.
For those flying within Europe, there are some destinations closer to home which unlike the United Kingdom and Ireland, retain a warm climate during the colder months. Countries like Portugal for example, particularly on the Algarve region are often still reaching temperatures of 22 degrees centigrade in October and only slowing down as far as 16 for Christmas. While these figures are not tropical by any means, for many people this is just the perfect temperature given the short flying time it takes to get there.
Of course, the classic winter holiday is of course a skiing holiday. Throughout the world, there are numerous opportunities for skiing. From the French Alps to Colorado and everywhere in between, where’s there’s snow there’s skiing and where there’s skiing there’s the opportunity for a family ski holiday.
Skiing holidays provide a fantastic way to enjoy what winter has to offer while at the same time giving you a holiday that provides plenty of physical activity during the day and relaxation during the evenings. Skiing holidays are also perfect for the whole family given most ski resorts cater for families, offering lessons for all levels of skill and for all ages. Should the children get tired, they can always retire to the room for a quick nap or head away from the slopes to build a snowman.
While a ski trip may appear slightly less expensive than say a warmer holiday to Thailand or Australia, it’s important to factor in additional costs such as renting ski equipment and covering yourself with medical or travel insurance. After all, if you’re in a foreign country you want to make sure that you will be properly attended to in the unfortunate event that an accident occurs.
Holiday insurance is just one of the necessary considerations for a winter holiday. While the idea of just spontaneously hopping on a plane is tempting, it’s important to make sure passports are up to date and that you have all the necessary paperwork or visas. Of course, if you have all of these, why not jump ship for a few days and give yourself a break?
