ZANZIBAR SNORKELING – SNORKELERS PARADISE
The outstanding corals of Zanzibar snorkeling offer a stunning experience for every snorkeler in Zanzibar. Regarded among the best in the world, Zanzibar snorkeling and diving areas will thrill you and give you an unforgettable Zanzibar holiday. More than 350 different fish species are recorded here alone, and most of the reefs are covered in beautiful hard and soft coral.
Common Marine Animals
Some of the most common species you should expect to see while snorkeling in Zanzibar are butterfly fish, parrot fish, clown fish, box fish, lion fish, angel fish, stingrays and many more. Other Zanzibar snorkeling wonders include turtles, dolphins, lobsters, squids, crabs, nudi-branches, starfish cucumbers, sponges, shrimps, sea urchin etc.
The deep water around Zanzibar attracts some of the real giants of the Indian Ocean and sometimes we see the amazing Humpback Whale very close to the beaches. Another visitor is the friendly Whale Shark that sometimes allows people to come very close. This giant is despite its name and size a harmless and friendly encounter. It’s the best find while snorkeling
Guidelines on how to snorkel in Zanzibar:
Our Zanzibar snorkeling trips are done on both the Jamboree Dhow as well as the Boston Whaler.
The Jamboree dhow takes up to 20 guests and the Boston Whaler up to 6 snorkelers. We, of course, provide you with snorkeling tools like quality masks, snorkel and fins.
Life jackets will be on board and we highly recommend these to be used while snorkeling and definitely by kids, insecure swimmers or any guest with any disability.
Zanzibar snorkeling – The Sites:
Mnemba Atoll
The famous snorkeling island of Mnemba Atoll is located south-east of Nungwi and it is a must to see. With its clear water and amazing coral reefs, this is a top spot for diving and snorkeling in Zanzibar. This is also where you get the best chances of seeing dolphins and turtles in the deeper waters. The light surrounding this atoll is very beautiful.
Tumbatu Island
Tumbatu Island is the mysterious and untouched snorkeling spot on the north of Nungwi. A permit is required in order to go to this Island and therefore only very few tourists go there to snorkel. However, we can go to the beautiful reefs surrounding this island and they are truly amazing with myriads of fish and corals.
Mwana wa Mwana
This small island just north of Tumbatu has a coral garden that is absolute world class. The variety of soft coral here is stunning and the colors of this reef are truly unique. Shoals of reef fish habitat this little underwater paradise where time will fly away.
Kendwa Reef
This reef runs along the beach of Kendwa south of Nungwi. Parts of this reef are still incredible, but sadly some areas have been damaged through the time. We will take you to the best snorkeling spots and you will get a view of Kendwa Beach which is probably the most beautiful beach on Zanzibar.
